Mella, a Chicago-based startup, is building an ecosystem of health monitoring solutions for veterinarians and pet parents, starting with the first-ever accurate axillary thermometer, followed by a body fat analyzer, pulse oximeter, and more. Preventative tools are now accessible, allowing pets to live longer, happier lives.

The Mella Home, designed for pet parents to use in-home and outdoors, includes a mobile app, which pairs the device with a mobile phone. By placing the device under the foreleg or hindleg, Mella tracks accurate axillary temperature. The device takes the body temperature and displays the result within approximately 10-15 seconds. The Mella Home sends data automatically recorded on the smartphone and can be exported and sent to the vet, or shown to the vet in real-time via telehealth.

Mella Pro

The Mella Pro Smart Thermometer measures temperature comfortably under the foreleg or hind leg. Mella Pro syncs with any devices to send temperature data automatically into the Practice Management System where it can be analyzed and made intelligible for you.

Pets, vets, and parents agree getting pets’ temperature taken is the worst part of vet visits due to vets taking temperature rectally, which causes fear and anxiety for the pet. By placing the Mella Pro under the fore leg or hindleg, Mella is the first to measure accurate axillary temperature without the use of a rectal probe. The device takes the body temperature and displays the result within approximately 10-15 seconds. The data is automatically recorded and can be sent to the practice management system. Mella uses machine learning algorithms to achieve accuracy, and clinical trials are ongoing at the University of Georgia and Cal Poly Pomona to publish a peer-reviewed study on its accuracy levels compared to a rectal thermometer.
