Lesson 1: Feline Annual Visit

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Review the Emotional Medical Record (EMR) and identify crucial information from the EMR to plan an appointment
• Communicate pre-visit protocols to clients
• Recognize changes in FAS as measured with body language & FF FAS Scale
• Implement Considerate Approach, Touch Gradient, and Gentle Control for an FAS 0-3 Feline patient
• Update the EMR for continued successful future visits

Lesson 2: Feline Exam with Planned Sedation

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Obtain a pre-visit emotional medical record
• Make a plan for feline sedation based on the pet’s emotional medical record (EMR)
• Communicate pre-visit protocols to clients
• Implement considerate approach, touch gradient, and gentle control for an FAS 4-5 feline patient
• Update the EMR for continued successful visits

Lesson 3: Canine Diagnostic Imaging

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Obtain a pre-visit emotional medical record
• Make a plan for feline sedation based on the pet’s emotional medical record (EMR)
• Communicate pre-visit protocols to clients
• Implement considerate approach, touch gradient, and gentle control for an FAS 4-5 feline patient
• Update the EMR for continued successful visits

Lesson 4: Canine Exam, bloodwork, vaccines and victory visits

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Assess when a patient’s procedures need to be postponed and develop a plan based on the patient’s EMR to lower FAS in the future
• Communicate to the owner and staff that postponing procedures is sometimes best for the patient, client, and veterinary team
• Understand the importance of using victory visits and medical management to help decrease FAS

This module has 4 lessons. Lesson 1 will introduce the developmental periods and life stages of cats and dogs and how to optimize behavioral development during these stages. Lesson 2 will explore the general characteristics of cats and dogs. By understanding their species-specific needs, we can provide an appropriate routine, enrichment program, and management, which will be discussed in lesson 3. In lesson 4, we will investigate characteristics of successful pet owners.

Lesson 1: Feline and canine development and life stages

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• List the 9 developmental periods/life stages of cats and dogs
• Identify factors that can influence the temperament and behavior of offspring
• Recognize sensory development changes that occur in the first 2-3 weeks and understand how sensory stimulation can influence development
• Define the terms socialization and localization
• Recognize the ideal age to provide proper elimination substrates

Lesson 2: General characteristics of cats and dogs

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Identify typical characteristics of cats
• Identify typical characteristics of dogs

Lesson 3: Routine, enrichment, and management

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Identify activities to assist clients with meeting the exploratory, physical, and social needs of their cats and dogs
• Define and outline an appropriate routine for cats and dogs
• List environmental management solutions to set cats and dogs up for success

Lesson 4: Characteristics of successful pet owners

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• List the five key characteristics of successful pet owners
• Recognize how these characteristics provide pets with a Fear Free℠ environment in which to thrive
